Saturday brought a significant snowfall to Abraham Lake, with approximately 20 cm accumulating across the area. Intense winds have begun clearing snow from the ice, but most locations remain heavily snow-covered. The Ice Bubble Viewpoint currently has the least amount of snow, with roughly 35% of the ice surface exposed, and snow coverage increases the further west you go. A few more days of sustained strong winds will be needed to fully clear and polish the ice. In the meantime, there are still plenty of beautiful, clear patches of ice bubbles to discover.
A reminder that some areas that refroze after the heat wave (see Jan 16 ice report) remain weaker than the surrounding, older ice - particularly near shoreline, around inlets, and in locations where open water was present. While these areas are improving, caution remains crucial especially with the new snow coverage. Visitors should continue assessing ice conditions carefully, watch for visual changes, and avoid complacency.
As always, for a snapshot of real-time conditions, follow our Instagram and Facebook stories, where we typically share daily updates every day we’re on the lake.
These reports are shared for general awareness only. Always check ice thickness frequently and independently. Ice conditions can vary widely, and seeing other people on the ice does not guarantee it is safe. If you’re unsure about ice assessment, or simply want to find the best bubble spots, we strongly recommend joining one of our Ice Bubble Tours.
