Ice Awareness Course

​Learn the essential skills needed to assess, understand, and travel safely on natural ice. This hands-on 2-hour course is designed for anyone who wants to explore wild ice with
confidence - whether skating, hiking, or photographing the famous methane bubbles of Abraham Lake.

Course offered Saturday, January 3 and 31, 2026 from 10am-noon. Additional dates available for private bookings - please contact us.

Course Overview

This interactive session takes place directly on the ice, allowing you to learn and practice as conditions naturally present themselves. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of wild ice assessment, how to identify safe and unsafe ice, and what equipment every traveler should carry. From accessing the shoreline safely to recognizing pressure ridges, cracks, gas pockets, and weak ice structures, this course builds confidence through hands-on experience.

Led by a professional guide, you’ll practice real-world safety techniques right on the lake, gaining the knowledge needed to make informed decisions on frozen terrain.

Please note: This is an educational skills course, NOT a formal certification course.
