The recent heat wave is mostly over, but challenging conditions remain due to the lack of sustained, very cold temperatures. While slightly colder temperatures have helped slow further deterioration, they are not enough to restore strong, reliable ice in areas that have been compromised.
Multiple drain holes have been observed further out on the lake at all locations between the Ice Bubble Viewpoint and Cline Landing. These may have begun to refreeze with cooler temperatures, but the ice in these areas is not supportive. They remain extremely dangerous and difficult to detect. In addition, open water is present at all major access points, making entry and exit a challenge. Caution is required at all times.
At this time, strong ice-assessment skills remain absolutely essential for anyone venturing onto the ice. Carrying ice rescue equipment and knowing how to use it is also highly recommended. Ice near the shoreline is often the weakest and most unstable, even though it may feel safer to stay close. If you are uncertain about ice safety, it is strongly recommended to stay off the lake, or go with a guide. There are still interesting ice features and photo opportunities to explore safely from the shoreline.
On the positive side, the ice has been polishing up nicely, with some beautiful, clear bubble patches to be found.

These reports are shared for general awareness only and are not a substitute for on-site assessment or real-time decision-making. No wild ice can ever be considered completely safe. Always check ice thickness frequently and independently. Ice conditions can vary widely, and seeing other people on the ice does not guarantee it is safe.
Canadian Rockies Escapes does not make any guarantees regarding ice safety for independent or self-guided travel. Individuals who choose to access frozen lakes or reservoirs do so at their own risk and are responsible for assessing conditions and making their own safety decisions.
Ice safety assessments conducted during guided experiences are specific to the time, location, and conditions of that tour and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere or at another time.
If you’re unsure about ice assessment, or simply want to find the best bubble spots, we strongly recommend joining one of our Ice Bubble Tours. As always, for a snapshot of real-time conditions, follow our Instagram and Facebook stories, where we typically share daily updates every day we’re on the lake.
