Bubbles are still looking great but conditions are challenging due to the ongoing heat wave

The heat wave continues, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the double digits and nighttime lows hovering just around freezing over the past several days. These warm conditions are expected to persist through the weekend. As a result, the ice surface is becoming compromised once again. Areas of weakened ice and open water should be expected not only along the shoreline, but also further out on the lake.

At this time, strong ice-assessment skills are absolutely essential for anyone venturing onto the ice. Keep in mind that ice closest to shore is often the most unstable. While it may feel safer to stay near shore, this is where many incidents tend to occur. If you’re uncertain about ice safety, there are plenty of cool ice features to explore right from the shoreline without venturing out onto the lake.

The bubbles still look great despite the challenges, but conditions vary hourly. During warm spells like this, ice bubbles are often clearest in the morning before the sun has time to heat the surface; by afternoon, conditions can become foggy but spectacular in their own way as the surface gets covered in water and creates amazing reflections.

As always, for a snapshot of real-time conditions, follow our Instagram and Facebook stories, where we typically share daily updates every day we’re on the lake.

These reports are shared for general awareness only. Always check ice thickness frequently and independently. Ice conditions can vary widely, and seeing other people on the ice does not guarantee it is safe. If you’re unsure about ice assessment, or simply want to find the best bubble spots, we strongly recommend joining one of our Ice Bubble Tours.
