Big changes this week with the ongoing cold spell: Abraham Lake is starting to fully freeze over. However the system remains very fragile and in an early-stage transition.
⚠️ Warning: Very early-season conditions. The ice is still extremely thin, ranging from 1–8 cm, with large areas of open water just east of the Ice Bubbles Viewpoint. Thickness varies dramatically over short distances due to wind, currents, and fluctuating temperatures. These conditions are unstable and not suitable for travel. Extreme caution is advised, and for most people, staying off the ice entirely is the safest choice at this stage.
Preacher’s Point remains the only section of the lake where the ice is 20+cm thick. However the ice surface here is currently snow-covered, with approximately 12–15 cm of snow blanketing the area. This snow can hide hazards such as thin ice, cracks, or open water beneath. Visual assessment is especially difficult under these conditions.
A reminder early-season wild ice is unpredictable and changes quickly. What appears frozen one day may not be the next. Looking ahead, continued cold temperatures will be necessary to build safer, more consistent ice across the lake. We’ll be monitoring closely and will provide further updates as conditions develop.
As always, these observations are provided as guidance only. If you are unsure, we always recommend booking one of our Ice Bubble Tours.
We try to post these ice reports once or twice a week, but conditions change fast. For more updates, follow our stories on Instagram or Facebook as we usually post every day that we are out there.
This will be the last update until Boxing Day. Merry Christmas everyone!
