Late season conditions!

A Chinook has been blowing in over the weekend and is forecasted to last all week. That, combined with the longer days and warmer sun means late season conditions at Abraham Lake, and this will be our last update of  the season.

The lake is mostly clear of snow. You can still find some bubbles at all major bubble viewing spots, but the ice has become very foggy and can get quite slushy through the day, which greatly impacts both bubble viewing and skating conditions. Still some cool ice features to check out if you keep an open mind.

Ice thickness is still well over 20 cm across Abraham Lake. As the weather warms up the ice starts to weaken in spots, so make sure you assess as you explore, and watch for areas of open water near shore and around springs.

Foggy bubbles and late season ice features across the lake.

A Chinook has started to blow in, putting an end to a 2 week stretch of very cold weather. We are now entering late season conditions, and things can change fast at this time of year.

Ice thickness is well over 20 cm across Abraham Lake. The lake is partly snow-covered, with more snow at Cline Landing and less at Preacher's Point. Great patches of bubbles can still be found at all major bubble viewing spots and there is good skating away from shore.

As the weather warms up, be on the lookout for open water near shore and around springs. If you are not familiar with ice safety, now is a great time to hire a guide.

Access to the ice surface can be steep in spots. Be sure to wear proper ice traction devices and seek out lower-angled entry points for a safer descent.

Lots of great bubbles across the lake.

Abraham Lake is partly snow-covered as of February 21.

Watch for areas of open water close to shore and around springs.

Recent snowstorms, strong winds and cold temperatures are giving the ice more and more character.

Ice thickness is well over 20 cm across Abraham Lake. Following the recent storm, the lake is partially covered in snow, but with the winds howling relentlessly today, it should clear and polish beautifully for the weekend. You can find patches of bubbles at all major bubble viewing spots, except Cline Landing which is currently almost fully snow-covered.

As the water level continues to drop, the shoreline is becoming steeper, making access to the ice increasingly challenging in some areas. Be sure to wear proper ice traction devices and seek out lower-angled entry points for a safer descent onto the lake’s surface.

Great bubble patches and neat ice features can be found across the lake.

Abraham Lake is partly snow-covered and the winds are blowing strong!

Full snow coverage at Cline Landing as of Feb 12, 2025.
