Another Chinook is underway, and we are expecting warmer temperatures for the next week or so. Strong winds have significantly reduced snow cover on the lake - only about 10% remains at the Ice Bubble Viewpoint, Hoodoo Creek, and Abraham Slabs. Cline Landing is still mostly snow-covered, while Preacher’s Point sits at roughly 50%. There are plenty of striking ice patterns to explore, along with areas of candle ice. During warm spells like this, bubbles tend to look best in the morning before the sun has time to heat the ice; afternoon conditions can become foggy.
With rising temperatures, shoreline ice has begun to weaken again, and areas of open water are to be expected. A reminder as well that some sections that refroze after the last heat wave (see Jan 16 ice report)Â remain weaker than the surrounding, older ice. Visitors should continue assessing ice conditions carefully and avoid complacency.
As always, for a snapshot of real-time conditions, follow our Instagram and Facebook stories, where we typically share daily updates every day we’re on the lake.
These reports are shared for general awareness only. Always check ice thickness frequently and independently. Ice conditions can vary widely, and seeing other people on the ice does not guarantee it is safe. If you’re unsure about ice assessment, or simply want to find the best bubble spots, we strongly recommend joining one of our Ice Bubble Tours.
