Some truly challenging but spectacular conditions out there due to this strong, prolonged heat wave. Shoreline ice has been significantly compromised, with widespread open water, drain holes, and areas of weakened ice. Be extremely careful around inlets, where ice is often thinner and more unstable, and steep shorelines. Areas of weak ice and open water are not limited to the shoreline and can be found further in. Be aware that sections of open water may refreeze overnight, but the ice is likely to be very thin. Anyone planning to visit the lake in the coming days should exercise extreme caution - advanced ice assessment skills are essential. Carrying ice rescue equipment and knowing how to use it is also strongly recommended.

While the heat can cause the ice bubbles to become quite foggy, they are still visible, and there are many other fascinating features to explore. Shore ice presents some very cool and unique features. The scene is dramatic and striking, offering a rare and unusual sight. Conditions change rapidly from hour to hour depending on temperature, sun exposure, and time of day, making it impossible to predict exactly what the ice will look like at any given moment.

As always, for a snapshot of real-time conditions, follow our Instagram and Facebook stories, where we typically share daily updates every day we’re on the lake.

These reports are shared for general awareness only. Always check ice thickness frequently and independently. Ice conditions can vary widely, and seeing other people on the ice does not guarantee it is safe. If you’re unsure about ice assessment, or simply want to find the best bubble spots, we strongly recommend joining one of our Ice Bubble Tours.

An example of compromised ice and open water along the shoreline. Areas like this will refreeze overnight with the colder temps but the ice will be very weak!
