Conditions at Preacher’s Point are currently quite unique and evolving. Recent very warm temperatures combined with strong winds have created some interesting and dynamic conditions out there, and there is currently approximately 1-2 inches of water sitting on top of the ice surface. While the underlying ice remains in place, the surface environment is changing quickly and requires extra attention. There are drain holes through some bubbles, with some reaching 3 to 4 inches in diameter.

As always, variability is the rule with wild ice. Thickness and surface conditions can shift over short distances, especially with fluctuating temperatures and moving water beneath the ice. Expect wet areas, occasional open water near shorelines, and developing pressure features as water levels and temperatures continue to change.

A reminder that wild ice - particularly during periods of rapid warming - can be unpredictable. If you’re unsure about ice safety or would like help navigating current conditions and finding the best bubble zones, we continue to recommend joining one of our Ice Bubble Tours. Our guides are monitoring conditions daily, as what looks manageable one day can be very different the next.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to drop again later this week after this warm, windy stretch. This cooldown will refreeze surface water and further change ice quality and appearance. We’ll be watching closely as conditions adjust. Stay tuned!

We try to post these ice reports once or twice a week, but conditions change fast. For more updates, follow our stories on Instagram or Facebook as we usually post every day that we are out there.

Challenging conditions this week but still some great bubbles to be found!
